Planning Ahead In Islam: Preparing For The Akhirah

Preparing for the Akirah is very important, as life here on earth is simply a test that determines where we will spend eternity.

Whether everlasting life will be in Jannah (Paradise) or Jahannam (Hell) is down to how we behave in the world, reminding us how we need to remain accountable for our actions as,  everyone will ultimately face the Day of Judgement.

As the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever is concerned about the Hereafter, Allah will place richness in his heart, bring his affairs together, and the world will inevitably come to him.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2465)

That’s why it is essential that every Muslim prepares for the Akirah, living according to the teachings of The Qu’ran so they can be rewarded with eternal life in Jannah after death.

How to prepare for the Khira (Hereafter):

  1. Salah (Prayers), Dhkir and Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ

It’s important to perform your five daily prayers consistently, while also increasing in voluntary acts of worship. This includes performing Tahajjud (the night prayer).

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Allah descends every night to the lowest heaven when the last third of the night remains and says: ‘Who is calling upon Me so that I may answer him? Who is asking of Me so that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness so that I may forgive him? – and this continues until dawn.” (Sahih Muslim 758B)

You should also focus on Dhikr, which helps to strengthen your connection to Allah, provides protection against Shaytan.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Shall I not inform you of the best of your deeds? The remembrance of Allah (dhikr).” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3377)

Sending blessings (salawat) upon the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah will send ten blessings upon him.” (Sahih Muslim 384)

These prayers, together with consistent daily recitation of the Qur’an, are a clear sign of your sincere devotion and commitment to Allah.

  1. Sadaqah Jariyah (Ongoing charity)

Muslims should also prioritise Sadaqah Jariyah, which is a charity that continues to benefit others even after a person has passed away.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“When a person dies, all their deeds come to an end except three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them.” (Sunan an-Nasa’i 3651)

This can include acts such as supporting schools, planting trees, or helping to build a masjid, all of which continue to bring reward long after they are done.

  1. Mending family ties

Strengthening and repairing family relationships is essential when preparing for the Akhirah, as it helps preserve bonds both in this life and after we pass away.

Islam places great importance on maintaining kinship ties (silat al-rahm), treating others with kindness, and upholding good character.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should maintain the ties of kinship.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6138)

This can be achieved by treating people well, staying connected with relatives, and reflecting on death, which helps us prioritise good deeds and avoid harmful behaviour.

Since no one knows when their final moment will come, the best preparation is to remain close to Allah, consistently seek His forgiveness, and show sincere love, faith, and devotion to the Prophet ﷺ while we are still alive.
