A Shariah-compliant Muslim burial is generally carried out as soon as reasonably possible, allowing family, friends and members of the Muslim community to come together to offer the Janazah prayer and make du’a for the deceased.
The washing, shrouding, funeral prayer and burial are therefore normally arranged without unnecessary delay, subject to legal requirements and any circumstances that may prevent an immediate burial.
After the burial, loved ones may remain at the graveside to make du’a and ask Allah ﷻ to forgive and have mercy upon the deceased.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would say to those present after burial:
“Ask forgiveness for your brother and ask that he be made steadfast, for he is now being questioned.”
— Sunan Abi Dawud – 3221
How Long Do Friends And Family Remain At The Graveside?
There is no fixed length of time that family and friends must remain at the graveside after a Muslim burial. However, it is encouraged to stay for a short while after the burial, making du’a and asking Allah ﷻ to forgive and grant mercy to the deceased.
This is based on the advice of ‘Amr ibn al-‘As, who said before his death:
“When you bury me, fill my grave well with earth, then stand around it for the time within which a camel is slaughtered and its meat is distributed, so that I may enjoy your company and ascertain what answer I can give to the messengers of Allah.”
— Sahih Muslim – 121
This narration highlights the importance of remaining at the graveside after burial and making du’a for the deceased as they enter the next stage of their journey to the Hereafter.
What Is The Mourning Period For Loved Ones?
In Islam, grief and sadness after the death of a loved one are natural. Islam does not prevent us from mourning, crying or feeling the pain of loss. However, it provides guidance on how mourning should be observed.
For the death of someone other than a husband, a woman is permitted to mourn for up to three days. This does not mean that sadness or grief must disappear after three days; rather, it refers to the formal period of mourning.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“It is not legal for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for more than three days”
— Sahih al-Bukhari – 1281/1282
What Is The Mourning Period For Widows?
Islam provides a specific mourning period, known as ‘iddah, for a woman whose husband has passed away. A widow observes a waiting period of four months and ten days.
Allah ﷻ says:
“Those of you who die and leave wives behind, let them observe a waiting period of four months and ten days.”
